My name is Russell M. Killen and I am a lifelong resident of Ashe County. I am 58 years old and have been married to my wife, Diane Roland Killen for 34 years. We attend Jefferson United Methodist Church. I am the father of two daughters, Whitney Killen and Jessica Roland Hamilton, and have two grandchildren, Sawyer and Addisen. I graduated from Ashe Central High School in 1979, and became a graduate of Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in 1987. In the same year I started my business, Mountain Auction Company, Inc., which I currently operate from the Old Cattle Market in Crumpler. I have over 40 years of public relations experience through my roles as a manager, employer, and small-business owner. Additionally, I have spent the past 38 years as an involved member of my community. I am a member, and past master, of the Ashe Masonic Lodge 594, a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple, and past president of the Ashe County Shrine Club. I hold the title of 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason as well as lifetime membership, and am a current member of Jefferson Lodge #38 Independent Order Odd Fellows. I am a Notary Public and also I held the position of board member on the Alcoholic Beverage Commission of West Jefferson from 2007 to 2017, and have provided aid, personally and professionally, to multiple fundraisers throughout Ashe County.

My main reasoning for running for Ashe County Commissioner is that I feel the county needs a person that loves the county, has good common since and can be a good steward of the tax payers’ money. Hopefully with the growth of the county coming with the new 4 lane highway of 221, we will be able to have more economical growth in our county to keep our young people here employed instead of looking for work elsewhere.
