Presidential Debate Watch Party Was Fun

What a blast we had last night at Ashe County Democratic Party Headquarters watching Kamala eat Trump's lunch during the Presidential Debate. The debate was a stark contrast between Kamala's logical and thoughtful statements and arguments, and hope for the future, vs. Trump's doom and gloom, word salads, and non-sensical generalizations about everything. It was fun for us to share this experience in person, hoots, hollows, and boos and all. We're so fortunate to have this base of Democratic support in Ashe County and an awesome headquarters to share such experiences. Many thanks to everyone who helped make last night's watch party happen.

We had an enjoyable and informative General Meeting on August 27, 2024, with Braxton Winston, the Democratic Party's nominee for the State Labor Commissioner. He sincerely cares about workers' rights. He and his family have a long history of public service. Braxton was elected three times to the Charlotte City Council, also serving as Mayor Pro Tem. He believes that a healthy workforce leads to healthy communities, which also benefit employers. Braxton explained the responsibilities of the Commissioner of Labor, the importance of the Council of State, and his focus areas upon election. We greatly appreciated Braxton driving all the way from Charlotte to speak with us. He will make an awesome Commissioner of Labor!

Ashe Dems at Christmas in July

The Ashe Dems had a strong turnout of volunteers and visitors yesterday at our booth for the Christmas In July/CIJ festival in West Jefferson. Democratic candidates came from near and far to join us in spreading the Democratic message. Many thanks to Democratic candidates Allison Riggs (NC Supreme Court), Chuck Hubbard (US Congress 5th Dist.), Ben Massey (NC House Dist. 93), Frank Hughes (NC Senate Dist. 47), and Ashe County Commission Candidates: Tanya Robinson, Nancy Beth Weaver, and Ann Rose. Our progress is possible only through the help of our generous donors, volunteers and the candidates who carry the torch. Your rights are under threat by the GOP. Help us fight to preserve those rights. More photo highlights to come.

We had such wonderful and eager volunteers help out during yesterday's canvassing event. The Ashe Dems would not be the success that it is without the many volunteers and candidates willing to make things happen. Thank you everyone for volunteering and hitting the streets and backroads to share the Democratic message! We've just begun to fight!

Big Crowd at Dems Open House

We were pleasantly surprised at the large number of people who came to the Ashe Dems Open House on Saturday, June 8, 2024, over the course of three hours. Democrats and progressively minded people from Ashe, Watauga, Wilkes, and Avery counties joined us to celebrate our new headquarters, and share good old fashioned Dem Fellowship, hotdogs, ice cream, and engaging discussions. Many thanks to all of our leaders, volunteers, donors, visitors and supporters. Too many to list here, but you know who you are. Our new headquarters is an excellent a meeting place to hold events such as this. Watch this page and our social media for future event times and dates. Teamwork makes the dream work in 2024!

FDR Dinner Was Fun

We had a blast at the FDR Dinner and Award Ceremony on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Sixty-nine Democrats and progressively minded people attended the event at the Ashe Shrine Club to celebrate FDR's values and legacy.

They also attended to listen to, and meet, Rep. Wesley Harris, Democratic Candidate for State Treasurer. Thank you Wesley for coming to our corner of the State! As Wesley and others said, we need to elect into public office people who will invest in the citizens of North Carolina.

We also celebrated Darlene Sekarek's receipt of the coveted FDR Award, which was much deserved. Darlene wears many hats, including President of the Democratic Women of Ashe/DWA. She probably deserves about 12 FDR Awards based on her many years of work to keep Democracy alive.

The FDR Dinner also included a silent auction , which raised money to help fund our Democratic Headquarters. The catered dinner and company were excellent. The whole night was a hit. So many people worked together to make this happen. Special thanks to all of our organizers, especially Jeanine and Tommy Noblett, who were instrumental in organizing the event and making it happen. Enjoy some of the event photos here

Thank You Caroline and The Lost Province

We were so fortunate to have Caroline Renfro of Lost Province Center for Cultural Arts speak to the Ashe Dems on April 23 about the organization's vision for the Historic Lansing School where they are located. The building was constructed by the WPA. Lost Province envisions developing a strong educational component, including the culinary arts, as well as exhibition and hospitality options.

April 13 Litter Sweep

Many thanks to our hearty Ashe Dems who helped clean litter and recyclables from our adopted road, West Deep Ford Road, West Jefferson. It was a very windy day. But our team hung in there to help Keep Ashe Beautiful.

Ashe Dem Convention Highlights

We had a wonderful time at the Ashe County Democratic Party's Convention on March 16, in Jefferson. Fifty-four  people attended, which included precinct chairs and members, party officers and board members. Several videos were played highlighting Democratic Party accomplishments and our path forward for 2024. Candidate speeches were given, sharing plans and goals for 2024, and beyond. Many thanks to Chuck Hubbard, candidate for the 5th Congressional District seat running against Virginia Fox; Ben Massey, Jr., candidate for the NC House - District 93, and County Commissioner candidates Nancy Weaver Hoffman, Tanya Robinson, and Ann Rose. Lots of good energy. And amazingly, this was all done by volunteers and contributors like you!  See Convention Highlights here.

100 Year Old Democrat Gives Candidates Advice

We were proud to have H.C. Moretz, Jr., join us at the Ashe County Democratic Party Convention on March 16. H.C. turned 100 years old a few days earlier. H.C. fought for Democracy in the Battle of the Bulge against fascists in WWII, and he continues to fight for Democracy back home, by being politically active. H.C.'s granddaughter, Ashely Moretz-Elks, is following in his footsteps as an officer of the Democratic Women of Ashe/DWA and assisting the Young Democrats. She also knows how to fight for what's right. H.C. has some advice for all of us.

Also, Ben Massey, Jr., is running for the N.C. State House of Representatives, District 93. Read more about Ben, here.

Impressive Turnout at Ashe Dem Precinct Organization Meeting

Over 40 Ashe County Democratic Party precinct members attended the Precinct Organization Meeting on February 17, 2024, at Family Central in Jefferson. This meeting was necessary to organize precincts and select delegates who would vote at the Ashe County Democratic Party Convention on March 16, 2024. The meeting was fun and interesting and provided Ashe Dems with Dem fellowship and the group heard from four local candidates, Ben Massey, Jr., Nancy Weaver-Hoffman, Tanya Robinson, and Ann Rose.  Here are some photos of the event.
