Ben is running for the NC House -  District 93 seat in 2024. Ben genuinely cares about Democracy and the plight of the working man and woman. He has been an active member of the North Carolina Democratic Party (NCDP) since the 1970’s. He is the First Vice Chair Vice of the Ashe County Democratic Party, a Delegate to the 5th District, and a member of the State Executive Committee of the NCDP.

 

Ben grew up in a small community in Zebulon, North Carolina and he knows what it means to be a good neighbor. His dad was a mail carrier and his mom owned a dance school. His grandfather was a deputy sheriff who was shot and killed in the line of duty. Ben grew up barning tobacco and working at the local gas station.

 

He received his Bachelor of Science in physical therapy from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and his Master of Arts from the University of Phoenix. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree by Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions.  He and his wife currently reside on a small farm in Grassy Creek, North Carolina

 

Ben has a long and distinguished career in health care and community service. He began his career as a physical therapist in small community hospitals. He served two terms as President of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) (2000 – 2006), and also served as Secretary of the APTA Board of Directors, Vice Speaker of the APTA House of Delegates, and Chair of the APTA Nominating Committee. He served in numerous elected offices in the North Carolina Physical Therapy Association including President, Vice President, and Chief Delegate. He served as Secretary of the Foundation for Physical Therapy and as a Trustee for the Physical Therapy Political Action Committee (PT-PAC). He was also elected to the Board of Directors of the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy.   In 2016, he retired as Executive Director of the NC Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.

 

Upon his retirement, Ben managed the Watauga County Farmers’ Market in Boone, NC 2016-17 and in 2019, was elected President of the Ashe County Farmer’s Market.

 

In 2016, Governor McCrory presented Ben with “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine”.  This recognition is among the most prestigious awards presented by the Governor to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state. Ben’s leadership and extensive contributions to the profession of physical therapy and his community have also been recognized by numerous organizations. Ben really cares and needs our support!
